The bronze statue, entitled Vertwijfeling (Despair), was created in 2018 by Elselien van der Graaf. For this monument, it was decided to place the statue on an anthracite-coloured pedestal, mounted on a wooden plank. Small, colourful stoned can be placed around it. But soon people started placing the stones where it felt right for them. In the arm of the statue, or on the foot, or even on the head.
Every day, we work together to improve people's health. We want to believe that tomorrow can be better than today.
But what if one day that is not the case? What can we do when we have to let someone go? Where can you go when you realise that life has taken a terrible turn?
Perhaps what we need most then is comfort and space. Standing in front of this monument, you can slow down for a moment. Do you see the stones around the statue? They are part of an ancient custom. For centuries, people have been placing stones at important places. The idea is simple. In silence, you express your deepest feelings and thoughts. Then you place the stone by the statue. In this way, you give shape to what no one else can put into words for you.
