The French title of this work is no coincidence for Klement. For inspiration, the Amsterdam-born artist travelled through the Provence, amongst other places. There, he made both figurative and abstract still lifes of flowers, including this board cut. By gouging a hardboard plate, he made a print consisting of several layers. These hardboard plates are fairly soft, so you can’t add as much detail. You can see this in the coarse, thick lines. They meander across the paper and sometimes make abrupt angles. Even the round shapes have a sharp edge.
Klement gives the flowers a deeper layer by using different colours of yellow. He used the darker yellow colour to add depth to the flower buds and the underside of the leaves. The large leaves, protruding upwards and to the sides, are lighter in colour. Through the dark background, the artist makes the flowers shine from all sides.
