Like a spider's web, the twigs and leaves are intertwined. In this work by Jorn van Leeuwen, one dives from left to right, skids down along a leaf vein and briefly gets stuck behind the rampant roots. If you descend far enough, and take the right turn, you arrive at a young shoot that seems to give light. Like a halo, the tiny leaf is illuminated. The small scratches in the background are very gently pushed away to make room for this new shoot.
That point of light in Jorn van Leeuwen's almost entirely black-and-white work might just symbolise new life. The title ‘Senja’ refers to the artist's daughter, who came into the world on the day he completed the work. A symbolic end to the creative process and a loving reference to the arrival of new life.
