A touch may be desired, sometimes you may even crave it. An arm around your shoulder or a fleeting hand on your arm as a sign that someone is there for you. In this work by Maeve van Klaveren, the firm hand clamps around someone's upper arm can be both a sign of support, or a sign that someone is being held back. The softness of the material suggests a sweet, supportive touch. But the shadow around the fingers of the hand grasping the other arm gives this touch a strength, as if this person is firmly grasping the other and pulling them closer. This work is balancing on a thin edge of tenderness on the one hand and a tension between two people whose arms we only see pressed together on the other.
